Top Of The Pops
invaded our television
screens on New Year's Day 1964, featuring hordes
of a scary new faction called 'young people'
and presented by a cigar-chomping tracksuit-model
called Jimmy Savile. Not only that, but the
show was transmitted live, and its first edition
featured acts destined to become legendary,
such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Dusty
Springfield and The Hollies. Download wallpaper
or watch and listen to some of the Sixties recordings
on the now-defunct BBC TOTP web page. |

Important
Collection of Music Photographs to be sold
at Dreweatt's Clifton Auction Rooms on 24th
January 2012
One of the most important photographers
of jazz, blues and rock musicians over the
past five decades, David Redfern, recently
made a most generous donation of photographs
and posters to Amnesty International, many
of which are signed by him, and the collection
also includes several iconic images, amongst
which is the famous shot of Mick Jagger
wearing that 'white dress' costume at the
now legendary 1969 Hyde Park concert, the
first Pink Floyd line-up (with Syd Barrett),
rare photos of David Bowie and an unusual
picture of Count Basie lighting Princess
Margaret's cigarette. For

Roger
Corman Films
The horror stories of Edgar
Allen Poe were the inspiration for a series of stylish
colour films produced by cult director Roger Corman
on miniscule budgets. His output was incredible and
his low-budget productions included movies with titles
such as ‘She Gods of Shark Reef’, ‘Teenage Caveman’,
‘The Viking Women and the Sea Serpent’ and ‘The Little
Shop of Horrors'.

Sir
David Hirst, who has died aged 86, was a leading defamation and commercial
barrister and ultimately a highly regarded Lord Justice of Appeal.
During the 1960s he acted in a series of highly publicised libel cases. |
|
 |
Johnny
Otis, who has died aged 90, was an important influence on rock and
roll. His decision to identify with black people and their music led
him to develop an instinct for finding black talent, and he discovered
Little Richard, Jackie Wilson, Hank Ballard — and Etta James. |
|
 |
Etta
James, who has died aged 73, delivered blues, R&B, soul, ballads &
hard rock with equal conviction; an electric live performer, her ability
to communicate passion and pain was matched by few singers, black
or white. |

The
Story of The Iconic Music Paper - 'Mersey Beat'
Presented here, in his own words, is the definitive story of one of
the Sixties' seminal music newspapers - providing a fascinating and
unique personal insight into the early days of the 'British Beat Boom'
and the events, personalities, facts and legend surrounding the birth
of the greatest musical revolution the world has ever known.
Bill Harry was the founder of the Liverpool music paper which chronicled
the groups and venues responsible for the 'Mersey Sound', the publication
which was to give its name to the Sixties phenomenon and musical era
that has since become almost universally known as 'Mersey Beat'. |
