Simply Shadows - The Group: (update from Joe Murphy)

There are now six members in the band! Michael, rhythm guitar player, has moved to the South of Ireland and has been replaced by Brendan McArdle. One of my sons .. Joey .. (my namesake) joined up as our lead singer so we could do a Cliff and The Shadows tribute and our newest member, (also one of our club members) Brian Tuohy, who joined up to play keyboards, gives us the opportunity to expand our repertoire and the capability of performing tributes to many other Sixties groups and artists such as The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Animals, The Searchers, The Who, Roy Orbison and Chuck Berry, to name but a few. We are now definitely a work in progress! The relationships within the band? Joey (lead singer) is my son, Michael (rhythm) is Mick's (bass) son and Mick is my first cousin - a real family band! Mick, Martin, and myself started out playing music in the early sixties . . . (click here for a bit of Sixties history from Joe)

The Shadows Appreciation Club of Ireland:

Charles Campbell and Joe Murphy were surfing the internet looking for any information they could find about their favourite band, ‘The Shadows’, when they made contact with each other. A few other people got involved and they decided to meet up and to discuss forming a 'Shadows' club.
The venue for this first meeting was 'The Fox Hunter' on the Lucan road and the people who turned up were Charles Campbell, Joe Murphy, Sean Murphy, Mick Murphy, Michael Murphy, and Brian Tuohy. After some discussion, The Shadows Appreciation Club Of Ireland was born
.

The Shadows Appreciation Club Of Ireland is dedicated to appreciating the music and the sound of The Shadows, where like-minded musicians can meet and discuss the music they love in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. A
t their workshops they encourage young, budding musicians to come forward and play their own music and, with a little help, learn how to play The Shadows. At their social events they invite the public to come in and rediscover the fantastic music that The Shadows have given us. They play all their hits “LIVE” on stage and have discovered that both young and old enjoy this fantastic music. They mix up their performances by also playing some hits of The Sixties, including some Cliff No.1s, and this keeps all tastes happy. Dancing is definitely encouraged as they want everyone to have a great time and, when the live show is over, there is a “Sixties Disco” to round off the evening.

Sixties Memories:

Mick, Martin and myself started out playing music in the early Sixties. The Shadows were a huge influence on us, and we always played Shad's music. We worked in a number of groups, playing just about everything. Rock, blues, pop - if it was in the top ten we'd play it!

That was the Dublin scene in those days - 'groups' played in clubs and the 'showbands' played in ballrooms, though we would occasionally do a two band show with a showband. We (being the smaller) would start off the evening (the first two hours) and the showband would finish the night. The first group we had, that played for real (and got paid for it!) were called "The Rockin' Beats". We got the name from the Liverpool group called "The Mersey Beats". We used this name for quite a while (I really can't remember how long), but then we started getting some gigs in hotels and someone thought that a "posher" name was needed.
So, we became "The Delegates", and we were also known at one time as "The Cleveland" - our manager came up with this name as his brother lived in Cleveland at the time! Mick, Martin and myself have always worked together, and it looks like this will continue for some time to come now that the younger generation has joined in with the 'old folks', keeping family traditions - and the sound of the Sixties - alive!
