We are sad to hear that chat show host Simon Dee, one of the biggest stars on British TV in the 1960s, has died at the age of 74. Dee presented the Dee Time programme on BBC TV in the late 60s and was synonymous with the spirit of the Swinging Sixties.
Dee, real name Nicholas Henty-Dodd, started his career on pirate radio and was the first voice to be heard on Radio Caroline in 1964. He then moved to the BBC, where he was among the launch line-up for Radio 1.
Dee Time, his pop music TV show, attracted a peak audience of 15 million people from 1967-69. It captured the era, with closing credits famously featuring Dee driving away in an E type Jaguar next to a blonde woman. Our condolences go to his family and close friends.

The 60s can be viewed as two quite distinct parts, early years clinging doggedly to 50s styles then exploding into the wild fashion frenzy for which the decade is possibly best remembered.

BIGGER THAN THE BEATLES

Bill Harry investigates the Liverpool scene and the people who inspired the Fab Four to believe anything is possible…
At the start of the Swinging Sixties, Liverpool was a remarkable place, about to take the world by storm. Mersey Beat was born. A global revolution, based on a thriving Liverpool scene would change rock music and fashion forever, dominate the music charts at home and overseas, and influence generations of musicians to come. Journalist, music promoter and author Bill Harry was an instrumental figure on the scene, championing and even coining the phrase ‘Mersey Beat’. Bigger Than The Beatles, written by highly-respected Mersey Beat author Bill Harry, is a fascinating and entertaining insight into the cultural phenomenon that was Merseyside in the 1960s, featuring rare and excusive pictures from the archives. If you read the well-prepared script written by the publicists of the day, it was all about four lads who shook the world. The truth is that Liverpool was actually Bigger Than The Beatles. Liverpool was a hub of talent, and while the giant acts under the management of the legendary Brian Epstein swept all before them, the city was much more than Mersey Beat as we know it. This fascinating book investigates the Liverpool scene and the people who inspired John, Paul, George and Ringo to believe anything was possible.

Bigger Than The Beatles will be launched at Beatles Story, Albert Dock, Liverpool, 7pm, 27th August 2024.
It is available, RRP £8.99, from 0845 143 0001 or www.merseyshop.com
